The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee called up Anshul Kamboj to the Test squad before the 4th Test against England. The right-arm pacer has joined the team and trained with the players in Manchester on Monday (July 21). Anshul, who is part of Chennai Super Kings in IPL, could end up making his Test debut just a couple of days after joining the national team. He was part of the India A squad for the unofficial Test series against England Lions.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra questioned the Indian team management after Anshul pipped Harshit Rana for a place in Team India. Harshit stayed back in England after the unofficial Test series. He returned home at a later date.
Aakash said that there was no clarity on why Anshul was called up instead of Harshit. "Harshit Rana is not there. Now you have to wonder, what actually goes on? How do you determine who to keep and who to let go of? If you talk about performances for India A, Anshul's performance was better, but you kept Harshit Rana looking at continuity," he said on his YouTube channel.
"If that was the case, then you should have kept Harshit Rana now as well. But he is not there; Anshul Kamboj is there. No clarity whatsoever. Maybe the management knows, but nobody is telling us anything. This comes as no surprise. Anshul Kamboj was deserving; he is now with the team."
Harshit was part of the team for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He played two Tests in Australia. He made his ODI debut in February 2025 and was part of the team which won the Champions Trophy. He has played one T20I so far.
Harshit was part of the India A-England Lions series. He scalped one wicket in only one innings in the two-match series.
