The retirement of Andre Russell will mark the end of an era in West Indies cricket. Russell announced that the first two T20Is against Australia will be his last in the West Indies jersey. Russell will go down as one of West Indies' greatest in the T20I format, with 1078 runs and 61 wickets in 84 matches. In ODIs, he scored 1032 runs and took 70 wickets in 56 matches. The numbers don't fully justify the aura he carried, and the match-winning cameos he played for the West Indies.
Ahead of his retirement series, Russell opened up on his favourite moment from his international cricket career. Chasing a huge score of 194 against India in the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal, Russell played a whirlwind cameo of 43 in 20 balls to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat. West Indies went on to win the T20 World Cup that year. The moment ranks at the top of Russell's sweetest cricket memories.
“Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters,” Russell said in an interview with the Cricket West Indies (CWI).
“Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did,” Russel, who also took Rahane’s wicket in the match, added.
Meanwhile, Russell said that representing the West Indies in international cricket is one of the proudest achievements of his life. “Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others," he said in a release by West Indies cricket.
