India have played well in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, but they find themselves trailing 1-2 in the series after three Tests. They won the second Test in Birmingham and lost in Leeds and Lord's, despite dominating the Tests for the most part. India's combination during the three Tests has also sparked intense debates.
India have opted to go in with all-rounders over specialist bowlers, which many feel wasn't the right call. India played Shardul Thakur along with Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test, before Washington Sundar replaced Thakur in the XI. Sundar didn't do well in the second Test, but he did pick up four wickets in the second innings of the Lord's Test. Jadeja, on the other hand, has scored multiple fifties in the series but has been below par with the ball.
Rahane emphasized the need to pick 20 wickets to win a Test and urged India to play an extra bowler in Manchester.
"We all know that Day 4 and 5 get slightly difficult to bat on. It’s not easy to score runs. Yes, England bowled really well. But I felt India missed an opportunity to get that big score on the board in the first innings. And also, I feel going forward, India should look to add one extra bowler – because you’re going to win a Test match or a Test series by getting 20 wickets,” Rahane said on his YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, India will have to make some bold selection calls ahead of the fourth Test. The biggest question will be whether to rest Jasprit Bumrah or not, but Ryan ten Doeschate has hinted that India may unleash Bumrah in Manchester, given that the series is on the line. Apart from Bumrah, Rishabh Pant is unlikely to keep wickets, so India may consider playing Dhruv Jurel at the cost of Karun Nair. To accommodate an extra bowler, preferably Kuldeep Yadav, India will have to drop Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja — but it will be a very tough call given how they fared at Lord's.
