When Shubman Gill was named the captain of the Indian Test team, there were doubts if he would carry forward the legacy of the great Indian captains, but he has done reasonably well in the three matches he has led the side. Gill led India to a win in the second Test against England, but the team lost the first and third Tests to trail 2-1 in the series.
India could have easily won the lost Tests, but the lack of experience and inability to seize crucial moments cost India the games. Gill's captaincy is a work in progress, but the Indian captain has already proved that the leadership duties won't have a negative impact on his batting. In three games since taking over as India captain, Gill has scored over 600 runs, including three centuries.
Former India coach Gary Kirsten reflected on Gill's leadership abilities and said he has the potential to become one of India's greats, but added that he needs to learn the art of man management, something MS Dhoni was very good at.
“Well, it’s early days. I think he’s got great potential. Captaincy is a whole lot of things that you’ve got to put together. He’s a great thinker in the game. He’s a good player himself. But there’s a whole bunch of things you’ve got to get right. And I think man management is going to play, like any leader,” Kirsten said in an interview with Rediff.
“Dhoni was an incredible man-manager. If he can get that component of his leadership really fired up, I think he has all the credentials to become a great captain for India.”
Kirsten also reacted to Gautam Gamhir's stint as India coach and said he doesn't know him as a coach, but as a player, he was tough and had a strong personality.
“Well, I don’t know Gautam, the coach, at all.” Kirsten also gave insights into Gambhir’s personality. “Gautam, the player, I absolutely loved. He’s got a toughness to him that is very useful. I think he’s really strong. But he’s got a personality and he’s got a style. The big thing is does that personality and style connect with Indian players? That’s really what it’s going to be about.”
