India batter Ajinkya Rahane has proposed altering the Indian starting lineup for the fourth Test match against England. India lost the third Test at Lord's by 22 runs after failing to chase the target of 193 in the fourth innings, putting them behind 1-2 in the series. Rahane proposed including an additional bowler in the starting lineup for the fourth Test match at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester after India's devastating defeat. Additionally, he said that they lost a chance to score a lot of runs in the opening innings and take control of the match.
"We all know that Day 4 and 5 get slightly difficult to bat on. It's not easy to score runs. Yes, England bowled really well. But I felt India missed an opportunity to get that big score on the board in the first innings. And also, I feel going forward, India should look to add one extra bowler — because you're going to win a Test match or a Test series by getting 20 wickets," Rahane said on his YouTube channel.
Rahane also commended Ben Stokes for his game sense after he caused Rishabh Pant to run out just before lunch on Day 3.
"It's very easy for the fielder to get relaxed. When you see only two or three balls left before lunch, you can easily get relaxed. But his attitude towards the ball, his intensity, and getting that run-out — that's where I felt England came into the game,” he added.
Pant's run-out changed the course of the game because he and KL Rahul had amassed over 141 runs and were threatening to deny England the victory. But when India was all out for 387 in the first innings, his return to the pavilion helped England get back into the match. Because of his numbers of 5/111 in the match and his scores of 44 and 33 in two innings, respectively, Stokes was also named Player of the Match.
Meanwhile, India is keen to win the fourth match of the series after losing the third Test. As they look to even the series in the Manchester Test, which starts on July 23, it is unclear what adjustments they will make to their starting lineup.
