Brian Lara was evidently disappointed at the state of West Indies cricket as the country's cricket hit an all-time low earlier his week after they were bowled out by 27 against Australia with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland running riot at the Sabina Park in Jamaica during a pink-ball Test.
The hosts lost the Frank Worwell Trophy 3-0 after being beaten by 178 runs while chasing a total of 176 runs. A few hours after the embarrassing display by the Windies, Lara opened up about the state of the cricket in region and appeared to blame T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The ex-West Indies captain suggested that the West Indies team is no longer a priority for players and instead they are using the national team of the Caribbean Islands to get a contract in T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
"We played first-class cricket and some of us even played county cricket to try to get into the West Indies team. We are now using the Western East team as a stepping stone, as a stage for us to get, you know, contracts around. And that is not a fault of the player," said Lara on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast on the Overlap Cricket channel with Alaistar Cook, Michael Vaughan, and David Lloyd.
In the same interaction, Lloyd laid the blame on the door of India, England, and Australia and accused the 'Big 3' of leaving the other countries in a poor state financially.
"The big three, they take all the money. England, Australia, India take off the money. They get the big broadcast deals. You've got to have a more even distribution to allow West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka to complete," said Lloyd.
Meanwhile, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has called an emergency meeting and invited Lara alongside Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards.
