After a run of poor performances, former England cricketer Sir Geoffrey Boycott has asked for Zak Crawley to be removed from the national team. Boycott, who is renowned for his astute observations about cricket, expressed his worries when the youthful opener's difficulties persisted in the third Test match against India at Lord's. Since making his debut in 2019, 27-year-old Crawley has been a consistent member of the England squad. His international career has started off promisingly, but his play has been patchy, and recent performances have cast considerable doubt on his spot in the group.
Crawley scored a superb 65 in the first Test at Headingley, but since then, he has only managed scores of 19, 0, 18, and 22. His most recent dismissal at Lord's, which came after a poor front-foot drive to a wide delivery in the second innings, was especially upsetting and revealed his technical shortcomings once more.
"How many more chances is Crawley going to get? He has learned nothing in his 57 Tests. A waft in the first innings caught behind and a front-foot drive in the second innings to a wide sucker ball caught at gully. It was just a replay of too many of his dismissals. Time to go."
Boycott's comments reveal the mounting dissatisfaction with Crawley's position on the squad. The former England opener feels that Crawley's batting average of barely 31 and his five centuries to far do not support his continued selection. Boycott maintains that England cannot afford to carry a player who isn't performing regularly, despite the growing pressure.
Boycott's remarks come at a particularly important moment as England gets ready for the much-anticipated Ashes series against Australia later this year. He underlined the threat posed by players like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins, warning that the Australian fast bowlers would be excited about the chance to bowl to Crawley.
"Most opposition bowlers can't wait to get their sweaters off to bowl at him. Can you imagine what the Australian seamers are thinking about this winter's Ashes series? If Starc doesn't get you, Hazlewood and Cummins will."
