Be it the numbers, records, or the eye test, Brian Lara is universally regarded among the greatest batters to play the game and left a mark on the sport that will be talked about for ages to come. While there few milestones that the West Indies cricket great did not achieve, he was also among the mos elegant batters to watch and brought eyeballs to the game.
While there is no doubt that Lara will be among the toughest batters that many of the greatest bowlers to play the game faced but the sport's only player to hit a 400 in Test cricket has come out and revealed the best bowler he faced.
Lara named Australian cricket legend Shane Warne as his pick. The 56-year-old claimed that Muralitharan put more pressure on him and left him confused. Warne had the ability to pull out a magic delivery at any point.
"He is the best.I’d walk out to bat against Murali [Muttiah Muralitharan], and I’m confused. The first half an hour of Murali, I’d be confused, said Lara.Murali gave me more pressure than Shane. But I’d walk out to bat against Shane, the ball would be coming off the middle, every ball, and then about 2pm, 3pm, he just produces this magical delivery, or spell," said Lara in an interaction with Sir Alastair Cook, Phil Tufnell, David Lloyd and Michael Vaughan on the 'The Overlap Cricket' youtube channel's 'Stick to Cricket' podcast.
Through the course of his legendary career, which lasted 16 years, Lara played 131 Test matches and made 11953 runs at an average of 52.9 with 34 centuries and 48 half-centuries. He also played 299 ODIs for the West Indies and made 10405 runs at an average of 40.5 with 19 centuries.
The panellist also questioned Lara if he 'got on' with Lara. The ex-West Indies replied, “Of course! We had a great time together."
As far as Warne is concerned, he is Test cricket's second-highest wicket-taker with 709 scalps. He also took 293 wickets. The Australian legend passed away in 2022.
In international cricket, Lara and Warne faced each other 10 times. Warne dismissed Lara the third most times across formats (10) and in Test Cricket (7). This is the most any spinner has got his wicket. Muralitharan got the left-hander's wicket five times in Tests and six times across formats. Anil Kumble dismissed the West Indies batting talisman nine times, including five times in Test cricket.
Later in the show, Lara was asked to name the toughest team he faced and picked Australia.
