A day after the heartbreaking 22-run defeat at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London, the Indian cricket team players went to Clarence House on Tuesday (July 15) as King Charles met the Shubman Gill-led side. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's side also joined their men's counterparts for the royal meeting.
While the men are team are currently 2-1 down in the five-match series after a hard-fought three-Test matches, the women's team have created history in England with a 3-2 series victory in the five-match T20I series against the home side. This marked India's first-ever Women's T20I series win over England.
The Indian male and female teams met King Charles, with head coaches Gautam Gambhir and Amol Muzamdar also present. BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla was present and introduced the Indian players to the Monarch. Rajasthan Royals owner Manoj Badale was also present.
Post the meeting, Indian captain Gill spoke to the media and revealed that King Charles was sympathetic towards the team after a close defeat at Lord's and told the players that Mohammed Siraj's dismissal was an unfortunate one.
"It was amazing to meet King Charles III and he was very kind and generous to call us. We had some really good conversations. King Charles III told us that the way our last batsman got out in the previous test match was quite unfortunate, the ball rolling on the stumps...We told him that it was an unfortunate match for us and could have gone either ways. Hopefully, we will have better luck in both the next games," said Gill while speaking to the media.
Meanwhile, Shukla revealed that King Charles had individual conversations with all players and even enquired about the health status of Akash Deep's sister. The Indian pacer recently revealed she was diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment.
"It was a very historic moment that King Charles III invited Men's and Women's Indian Cricket teams. The players are very happy after meeting him...The King also asked me about the book that I gave him...He also asked me about the health of Indian Cricketer Akash Deep's sister," said the BCCI VP in an interaction with ANI.
"We had a discussion with the King regarding the Lord's test match...The King said that the dismissal of Mohammed Siraj was very unfortunate; otherwise, India could have won the match...The team has proved that they are fighters...We will win the series.," Shukla further revealed.
