Washington Sundar shone bright in the Lord's Test, picking up four wickets for 22 runs as England were bowled out for 192 in their second innings. Ahead of the fifth and final day of the third Test at Lord's, with India needing 135 runs to win and six wickets in hand, Washington said India are definitely winning. He is confident of India going 2-1 up in the five-match Test series despite finding themselves in a precarious situation at 58 for 4.
“Definitely India [are] winning tomorrow, probably in the first session," Washington said while speaking to former England captain Nasser Hussain and Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara on Sky Sports after Day 4 stumps.
When the duo asked him when India will chase down the target of 193 runs, Washington said, “Probably just after lunch."
“The position that we are in right now… probably for 1 (wicket loss) at the stumps would have been ideal, but yes, the way we bowled, all the fast bowlers in particular, the way they came out today and kept the pressure going throughout the day was amazing," he stated. Earlier, England’s assistant coach Marcus Trescothick fired a warning to India, saying, "We will get six wickets in the first hour tomorrow."
Washington, who contributed with the bat at Edgbaston by sharing a 144-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill, scored 23 in India's first innings at Lord's as India equalled England's first innings total of 387. He then bamboozled four England batters, picking up the important wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith. The Tamil Nadu spinner finished his 12.1-over spell with four wickets for 22 runs.
