After India levelled England's score of 387 all out in the first innings - thanks to a gritty performance by KL Rahul, who scored his second hundred on the tour, and vital half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja - a drama unfolded at Lord's, London. The hosts, England, resorted to time-delaying tactics in the fag end of Day 3. Six minutes were wasted by England to avoid losing a wicket, with Indian pacers steaming in to go full throttle. When England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett walked out to bat, India captain Shubman Gill was in Crawley’s face, and almost the entire Indian team encircled the pitch, heating up the game.
A frustrated Gill was caught on the stump mic yelling, "Show some fu*g b**s." The moment went viral, as Crawley denied India an over from the pavilion end. Annoyed by the tactic, Jasprit Bumrah stood on top of his run-up for the final delivery of the day. He bowled an absolute peach of a delivery that Crawley somehow managed to survive.
Crawley has been going through a lean patch against India, scoring 108 runs from five innings, with a highest of 65. He was unbeaten on 2 at the end of the third day's play at Lord's on Saturday.
No sooner had Bumrah completed his delivery than Crawley immediately turned back and briskly walked to the dressing room, as the umpires flipped the bails to signal the end of the day's play. It was the first instance of a time-delaying tactic reported in the series, setting up an exciting final two days of the match.
After stumps, England bowling coach Tim Southee played down the incident and called it "part of the game, an exciting way to finish the day." "It has been a great series. Both sides played good cricket in good spirit. Today, there was good energy from both sides," he added.
Rahul, who met the press on behalf of Team India, explained why Crawley opted for the tactic while also justifying why Gill was so angry with the wasted minutes.
"I am an opener so I can understand what he was doing, but Shubman Gill was fired up because we wanted to bowl two overs in the six minutes before stumps. Lot of theatrics and everyone was fired up," said Rahul.
