India fought hard and levelled England's first innings score of 387 all out - making it only the ninth such instance in Test history. With KL Rahul scoring a gritty hundred, and Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja making vital contributions with half-centuries, India eventually neutralised England's total, giving the hosts nothing to boast about. After England opted to bat first, they piled on 387, courtesy of a hundred by Joe Root. Half-centuries from Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse further helped England post a decent total before being bowled out in 112.3 overs. Jasprit Bumrah picked up a fifer and etched his name on the Lord's famous Honours Board.
When India came in to bat, their response was a mixed bag, with the team losing three wickets for 107 runs. Rahul shared a 141-run partnership with Pant (74) to pull India out of the danger zone. Jadeja (72), Nitish Reddy (30), and Washington Sundar (23) also chipped in with valuable contributions. India were eventually bowled out in 119.2 overs on the third day of the match.
It was only the ninth instance in the history of Test cricket that both teams ended up scoring the same runs after the end of the second innings of a Test match. The first such incident occurred between England and South Africa in Durban back in 1911, when both sides scored 199. The highest score that has ever been equalled was between England and West Indies in Antigua in 1994, when both teams scored a massive 593.
Incidentally, this was the third time India became part of this unique record. In 1958, in the Kanpur Test against West Indies, India scored 222 - the same as the visiting side - but India lost the match on that occasion. In 1986, India scored 390 - the same as England - at the Edgbaston Test, which ended in a draw. Now, it will be interesting to see the result of the Lord's Test.
England are currently batting on 2 for no loss at the end of the third day's play at Lord's, with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett at the crease. The series is currently level at 1-1 after England won the Leeds Test, while India bounced back at Edgbaston.
