Sunil Gavaskar wasn't amused with England's tactics against Rishabh Pant as they targeted him with short balls. Rishabh is dealing with a finger injury and didn't keep wickets after getting hit by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. England captain, Ben Stokes, asked his bowlers to keep it short. He had four fielders placed on the boundary ropes. Rishabh negated England's plan and scored a crucial 74 off 112 balls. The left-handed batsman was run out in the final over before the lunch break.
"Fifty-six percent of the balls bowled today have been short. They have four fielders on the boundary waiting for the bouncer. That is not cricket, according to me. When the West Indies were bowling short, they brought in a rule for only two bouncers per over. That was to restrict the strength of the West Indies," Gavaskar said on the air.
The India legend also made a special request to Sourav Ganguly, who is the chairman of the ICC men's cricket committee. "Now we are seeing bouncers being bowled. Look at the field that has been arranged. This is not cricket. There should not be more than six fielders on the leg side. If Sourav Ganguly, who is the chairman of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, is watching this, please make sure that next time not more than six fielders can be kept on the leg side," Gavaskar added.
Rishabh and KL Rahul rescued Team India and added 141 runs for the fourth wicket. Rahul created history and became the first Asian opener with two Test centuries at Lord's.
He also became the second Indian batsman after Dilip Vengsarkar with 2 centuries at this venue. Vengsarkar slammed 3 tons at the home of cricket. India's still trail by more than 50 runs. England were bowled out for 387 in their first innings.
