Jasprit Bumrah has returned to the Indian team with a big statement after missing the Edgbaston Test due to workload management. He took his 13th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in the third Test against England at Lord's on Friday. It was his 11th fifer in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries and his first at Lord's. His vicious bowling helped India restrict England to 387 in their innings and earned him a place on the iconic Lord's Honours Board. India finished Day 2 at 145 for 3.
Bumrah scalped the wicket of Harry Brook on the opening day of the Lord's Test before removing Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Jofra Archer on the second day to complete the five-wicket haul and secure his name on the prestigious Lord's Honours Board. Bumrah now owns the most five wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in Tests outside India. This is the second time he has dismissed four batters in an innings – 'bowled'. The previous time was in the Caribbean at North Sound in 2019, during his 5 wickets for 7 runs.
After the day's play, the Indian cricket board, BCCI, shared a video of Bumrah returning to the dressing room with hugs all around. He then signed a pair of shoes for the Lord's museum. Later, speaking to the BCCI Test Match Special, Bumrah said this achievement is something he can proudly share with his son, Angad.
"It feels really special because we don't come here very often. We don't play a lot of Test matches here. We come here maybe every four years. So you never know how many matches you'll get to play here. As a child, you've seen a lot of Test cricket played here. So now being on the honours board feels good," he said.
Talking about his workload management, with him mandated to play three Tests in the five-match series, Bumrah said he is taking it one game at a time.
“Reality is I was tired. I can’t jump around like a 21-year-old. I was happy that I contributed. The name on the Honours Board feels good. It is something I can tell my son about when he is grown up,” said Bumrah, who was rested for the Edgbaston Test due to workload management.
While Bumrah picked up a fifer, other bowlers including Nitish Reddy and Mohammed Siraj scalped two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja claimed one wicket.
