Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are set to meet each other in a second straight Grand Slam final. After their meeting in the French Open final at Roland Garros just over a month ago ‐ where Alcaraz clinched the title ‐ the duo is set for another high‐octane final, this time on the Centre Court of Wimbledon on Sunday. While two‐time defending champion Alcaraz is chasing a historic hat‐trick of titles at Wimbledon, Sinner has reached his maiden final in London. But before that, Alcaraz and Sinner have already achieved a historic milestone ‐ one previously accomplished only by two of the greatest rivals in the Open Era: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz and Sinner are now the only Roland Garros finalists to meet again in the same season’s Wimbledon championship finale. They are only the second rivals of finals after Federer and Nadal, who did it in three consecutive years from 2006 through 2008.
Alcaraz has been in fiery form, defending his French Open crown last month against Sinner. The Spaniard saved three championship points before stunning Sinner in a five‐set thriller. Alcaraz is now on a 24‐match winning streak ‐ the longest of his career.
Sinner, who won his second successive Australian Open title earlier this year, having also clinched last year’s US Open, will compete for the Wimbledon crown for the first time. The last time the same two men battled in consecutive major finals was at the Australian Open and Roland Garros in 2016, when Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in back‐to‐back Grand Slam finals.
While Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz of the USA in the semifinal, Sinner stunned Novak Djokovic in the other last‐four clash to reach the final.
Heading into the Wimbledon men’s singles final, Alcaraz enjoys an 8‐4 head‐to‐head record against the Italian and has won their past five meetings.
