Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar pulled no punches in his scathing attack on the British media in the first session of the second day's play in the third Test match at Lord's. The Indian think tank wanted the second new ball to be changed after bowling 10.4 overs with it. The umpires granted India's request after the ball failed the mandatory hoop test and called for a replacement. However, to everyone's surprise, the ball that was given to India was nowhere close to the one that was replaced, and that left India captain Shubman Gill and bowler Mohammed Siraj visibly upset.
"This is a 10-over old ball? Seriously?" Siraj was heard saying in the stump mic. Gill had a long animated chat with the umpires before getting on with the game. Gavaskar wasn't happy either and made his displeasure known while doing commentary for Sony Sports.
"Even from here you can see that is not a 10-over old ball, that is like a 20-over old ball," he said on air, while adding that ''if this would have happened in India..." where if there were not enough balls similar to the ones replaced, the British Media would have certainly made a big deal out of it.
Earlier in the session, Jasprit Bumrah struck for India and claimed all three wickets that had fallen in the session. He got rid of England captain Ben Stokes with a jaffa first, then cleaned up the centurion Joe Root before dismissing Chris Woakes in the very next ball. India would look to leave the ball controversy behind them and bowl the hosts out below 400 to give themselves a very good chance of winning the Test match. The five-match series is currently locked at 1-1, with both teams eyeing a lead.
