World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is doubtful for Wednesday's Wimbledon quarterfinal as he appeared to struggle with an elbow issue during his Round of 16 clash against Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian was forced to retire from the match despite leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, after suffering a pectoral injury, resulting in a heartbreaking exit from Wimbledon. Dimitrov sustained the injury in the third set, tweaking a joint muscle in his chest. After receiving medical attention, he waved to the crowd, visibly struggling to raise his right arm, as the medical team declared him unfit to continue.
Dimitrov's injury induced withdrawal handed Sinner a place in the quarterfinal, where he is scheduled to face Ben Shelton of the USA. Shelton has been in great form. He advanced to the Last 8 by defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, 7-5.
While Dimitrov's painful exit remains a major talking point, Sinner’s own fitness concern did not go unnoticed. The Italian took a medical timeout midway through the second set due to apparent elbow discomfort. He had earlier looked uncomfortable following a fall in the opening game but seemed to regain his rhythm before Dimitrov’s injury.
Sinner later revealed that he would undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of the issue. "It was an unfortunate fall – I checked the video and it didn't seem a tough one, but I still felt it a lot during serve and forehands especially," he told the media at the post-match press conference.
"Tomorrow we are going to check with an MRI [scan] to see if there's something serious, and then we will try to adjust it," he explained. "It happened very early in the match, in the first game. It was quite an unfortunate fall."
