South African stand-in skipper Wiaan Mulder etched his name in the history books despite deciding not to attempt to make a knock of 400 against Zimbabwe in the second Test of a two-match series currently taking place at the iconic Harare Cricket Club.
Mulder decided to declare the innings at 367, just 33 runs short of becoming the second player in Test cricket history to make a 400. While Mulder missed out on Brian Lara's 21-year-old record, he finished fifth on the list of highest individual scores in Test cricket history while also breaking a series of other records.

Wiaan Mulder Shatters Record Books

Muldeer's knock is the highest individual score by a player in Test cricket history away from home. The 27-year-old is the first player in history to secure the huge milestone of 350 in an away fixture. Previously, the record was held by Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad, who hit a knock of 337 against the West Indies in Bridgetown in 1958.

Mulder also became the first player in Test cricket history to score a century on his captaincy debut. Previously, the best score in an innings by a player in their maiden match as a captain belonged to Graham Dowling, who made 239 against India at Christchurch in 1968. Shivnarine Chanderpaul (203 vs South Africa in 2005 at Barouda is the only other player to score a double century while leading their country for the first time in Test cricket.
Mulder also broke Virat Kohli's record (256 runs) for the most aggregate runs in a Test match (combined tally of both innings) on captaincy debut and the first to make more than 300 runs.

Mulder also became only the second South African player after Hashim Amla to score a triple century and has the highest individual score by a Proteas batter in the longest format. Amla had made a knock of 311 against England at the Oval in 2012.
Meanwhile, Mulder also took two wickets in the match, making him the first player to score above 350 and take a wicket in the same Test. The previous highest individual score for a player, who also took wickets with the ball, belonged to Sanath Jayasuriya. The Sri Lanka cricket legend made a knock of 340 against India after taking a three-wicket haul.
Mulder is only the third captain after Michael Clark and Graham Gooch to score a triple century and get a wicket in the same match. He is the first triple-centurion captain with multiple scalps with the ball.
Mulder's tally is the highest individual score by a Test batter in a declared innings after Lara's 400. Infact, there has been no instance of a captain declaring the innings in Test cricket in between an individual score of 350 to 1000.
The South African star is also the first player to score a triple century in Zimbabwe.
