Nick Kyrgios tipped Taylor Fritz as a strong contender for this year's Wimbledon men's singles title. Fritz defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a testing five-set clash to reach the Round of 16 at Centre Court. The American won the match 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1. Not previously seen as a Grand Slam contender, Fritz’s best performance at a major remains a quarterfinal finish, which he achieved twice at Wimbledon, in 2022 and 2024. Kyrgios, however, is confident of Fritz pulling off a surprise at Wimbledon this year.
"The way Taylor Fritz has been playing, it’s probably one of the hardest draws a seed has had," Kyrgios told TalkSPORT. "He played three guys who are all very dangerous on grass. He’s come through that and is saying his body feels better and better, so I honestly wouldn’t count him out," he added.
Fritz defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round and Gabriel Diallo in the second. "Fritz can do some damage against those guys. Novak has at times looked incredible, but the way Sinner and Alcaraz are playing and dialled in, it’s pretty tough to go past those two guys," Kyrgios added.
The Australian, meanwhile, named Jannik Sinner as his “standout player” so far at Wimbledon, after the Italian dropped just 17 games across his first three wins. Sinner, a three-time Grand Slam champion bidding for his maiden Wimbledon title, is yet to lose more than four games in a single set.
"It’s hard to look past Jannik Sinner," Kyrgios said. "He looks really locked in and incredible. He hasn’t lost more than four games in a single set. His form is concerning to the rest of the field. It’s hard not to see an Alcaraz-Sinner final."
However, both Fritz and Sinner will face intense competition from Novak Djokovic, who is aiming to equal Roger Federer’s tally of eight titles at the All England Club and clinch a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic defeated Miomir Kecmanović to advance to the Round of 16, while two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz beat Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff to seal his place in the pre-quarterfinals.
