Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames, police said Thursday. Jota’s death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title.
Following the tragic accident, family and friends of the Liverpool forward and his brother gathered at a chapel where their bodies were brought for a wake on Friday, a day after the Portuguese soccer players were killed in a car crash.
Some hugged and wept before entering the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme. The brothers’ parents attended, as well as Jota’s agent, Jorge Mendes. Mourners left flowers and candles next to a tree outside the chapel were visitation was held.
Amidst the outpouring of emotions and the flood of tributes pouring in, a powerful and emotional letter written by Jota’s mother, Isabel Silva, touched hearts across the globe.
“He never asked us for anything,” recalls Isabel Silva, mother of Diogo Jota, in a moving letter shared by The Players’ Tribune.
"He never asked us for anything. He never said he wanted branded boots. He knew we couldn’t afford them, he was thoughtful. That’s why he learned to value things—and life.
The feedback we received from Paços de Ferreira (his first club) was amazing. They told us Diogo was very responsible and mature. And for us, that was enough.
Knowing our son behaved well was better than seeing him become a superstar. It made us feel that our work had been well done, and that filled us with pride.
He never went out at night as a teenager, only for his birthday. No dinners out, no parties—nothing. He stayed at home, even when I myself told him to go out.
For Diogo, if there was soccer in the afternoon and PlayStation at night, that was enough. We worked hard to give him his first console. He never asked for it. He never asked for anything."
