Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a 52-ball hundred in the 4th U-19 Youth ODI between India and England on Saturday. The 14-year-old studded his innings with seven sixes and 10 boundaries, continuing to give English bowlers a nightmare after the hosts chose to bowl first after winning the toss. He was eventually dismissed for 143 off 78 balls, including 13 fours and 10 sixes. In the previous match, Suryavanshi had smashed 86 off 31 balls, helping India register a four-wicket win over England U-19. In a rain-affected 40-over-a-side match, England scored 268 for 6, courtesy of captain Thomas Rew’s unbeaten 76 off 44 deliveries. However, Suryavanshi's remarkable innings overshadowed Thomas' effort as he slammed a 20-ball fifty to get India’s chase off to a blistering start.
Suryavanshi hit nine sixes and six fours before falling 14 runs short of the hundred. It was then his highest score in six Youth ODIs for India. Due to the roaring start provided by Suryavanshi, India chased down the 269-run target in only 34.3 overs.
His 20-ball half-century, however, fell short of the record held by Rishabh Pant in youth cricket. The current India Test vice-captain had slammed an 18-ball fifty against Nepal U-19 back in 2016. Suryavanshi’s nine sixes broke the Indian record in all Youth ODIs, surpassing Raj Angad Bawa and Mandeep Singh’s previous joint record of eight maximums each.
Suryavanshi rose to fame in IPL 2025 when he hit a 35-ball hundred - the fastest by an Indian in the history of the league. He scored 78 runs from boundaries, amounting to 90.69 percent of his total score. Only three other Indians – Pant, Sarfaraz Khan and Manan Vohra – have recorded a higher percentage of runs in boundaries in a Youth ODI innings for India.
