Vaibhav Suryavanshi, 14, has hit the right notes with each passing day and on Saturday, the youngest member of the India U19 side stunned the world with a blistering 143 off just 78 balls.
Suryavanshi, who has already played three brisk innings of 48, 45, and 86 in the previous Youth ODIs, crafted a blistering century that helped overshadow the senior team's performance at Edgbaston and catapulted him into the national spotlight. Overtaking the likes of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant means that Vaibhav Suryavanshi mania has well and truly begun.
However, that also means the youngster is simultaneously facing numerous distractions off the field. According to former India coach Ravi Shastri, Suryavanshi is being inundated with commercial offers. But thankfully, Rahul Dravid, the current head coach at Rajasthan Royals, has taken it upon himself to shield the prodigy.
"In fact, I was speaking to Kumar Sangakkara at the back of the box yesterday and he said he's been flooded with endorsement offers already, but how he's handling it is very important," Shastri revealed during the IND vs ENG 2nd Test match broadcast.
"He has got a good bloke in Rahul Dravid there. He's a mentor, a coach. He is keeping him on the ground. My word, what a talent at 14."
"That's why at that age it's essential. You have always found talent in India, from the ages of 16, 17, and 18. Tendulkar set the benchmark. But it's where they are at 23 and 24 that's important. A lot of them disappear; hence, handling is very important."
Former England captain Michael Atherton echoed the sentiment, citing the example of Prithvi Shaw. "It's not an absolute given, though, is it? I am thinking of the fact that Shubman Gill was obviously an India Under-19 player who has come through, but the captain of that team was Prithvi Shaw, who has played a bit but seems to have drifted to the other side a little bit."
As Suryavanshi continues his meteoric rise, it is an anchor like Rahul Dravid that will keep him on the right path.
