Shubman Gill has been unstoppable in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. Gill was named the captain of the team ahead of the series, and it was speculated that the pressure of leading the team could hamper his performance. Instead, Gill has come out with flying colours and has been the best batsman from both teams.
Gill scored a magnificent 147 in the first Test and backed it up with a mammoth 269 in the first innings of the second Test. The Indian captain scored another fifty in the second innings to put India in complete control of the game. The record-breaking run from Shubman Gill helped him etch his name in the record books.

Shubman Gill Shatters Multiple Records

Shubman Gill broke Virat Kohli's record of most runs by an Indian captain in a debut Test series. Kohli scored 449 runs in the 2014-15 tour of Australia, and Gill leapfrogged him in just his fourth innings as captain, with over 500 runs in the series. Gill also became the first Indian captain to score 300 runs in a Test match. The record was held by Virat Kohli, who scored 293 runs across two innings in a Test against Sri Lanka in 2017. The 25-year-old also jumped to fourth in the list of most runs by an Indian in a Test series in England. He is now only behind Sunil Gavaskar (542), Virat Kohli (593), and Rahul Dravid (602).
Meanwhile, Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar's 54-year-old record of most runs in a Test match. Gavaskar scored 344 across two innings against West Indies in 1971, and Gill has crossed the 350-run mark already. He is batting at 90* at the time of writing, nearing his third hundred of the series.

Most Runs By An Indian In A Test

Runs Batsman Opponent & Year
350* Shubman Gill vs England, 2025
344 Sunil Gavaskar vs West Indies, 1971
340 VVS Laxman vs Australia, 2001
330 Sourav Ganguly vs Pakistan, 2007
319 Virender Sehwag vs South Africa, 2008

India On Top

Meanwhile, along with Gill, Rishabh Pant also blasted a quickfire fifty and helped India's lead swell past the 400-run mark. India failed to defend 371 in the first Test, so they'll aim for a score of around 500-550 to bat England out of the game. The pitch is flat, and there is no Jasprit Bumrah. A 500+ score will still be challenging, and also test England's defensive skills. India would be desperate to win the Test and head to Lord's at 1-1.
