India great Virat Kohli reacted to Shubman Gill's Edgbaston heroics. Gill had a terrific outing in the match and scored 269 in the first innings. He backed the brilliant double hundred with another century in the second innings to put India on top in the second Test. Gill's masterclass in the first innings helped India post a solid 587, paving the way for a 180-run lead after Mohammed Siraj's five-wicket haul helped India bowl out England for 407.
In the second innings, Gill scored 161 as India declared at 427-6, setting a target of 608 runs.
Kohli took to Instagram and shared Shubman Gill's photo with a heartwarming caption. " Well Played Star Boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this.
Meanwhile, Gill shattered numerous records en route to his Edgbaston masterclass. Gill scored 430 runs in the match and broke Virat Kohli's record of most runs by an Indian skipper in a Test. Kohli had scored 293 in a Test against Sri Lanka in 2017. Gill also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record (344) of the highest match aggregate by an Indian in a Test.
Gill also registered a record of most runs by an Indian captain in a debut series. The record was held by Virat Kohli, who scored 449 runs against Australia in the 2014-15 tour. Gill, on the other hand, has already scored 585 in four innings.
Gill also became only the second player after Allan Border to score more than 150 in each of the two innings of a Test. He became the second Indian to score a double century and a century in the same Test after Gavaskar. Gill is also only the fifth batter to score more than 400 runs in a Test.
Meanwhile, Akash Deep picked two wickets and Mohammed Siraj bagged one to leave England reeling at 77-3 at stumps on Day 4.
