India are all set to take on England in the second Test of the five-match series at the iconic Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, as they aim to level the series, after a defeat in the first Test at Headingley. Jasprit Bumrah is expected to miss the match owing to workload management issues, as it will be a huge cause of concern for the Indian Team. The star fast bowler had revealed earlier that he would play nly three out of the five Test matches in the series. Former India strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai has revealed exactly when this decision was taken, and the condition under which Bumrah can reverse this decision.
In an interaction with The Times of India, Sohum Desai said that when Jasprit Bumrah missed the Champions Trophy 2025 due to his back injury, it was decided that he would play three Tests in England, looking at India's Future Tours Programme.
"When Bumrah couldn’t make it to the Champions Trophy, India’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) was studied, and it was decided that he would only play three Tests in England,” he said.
Desai also revealed that if Bumrah feels that there is a crucial juncture in the series, then he would revisit his plan of playing just three Tests Vs England.
“It then comes down to the team management and the bowler himself. It’s their call. If Bumrah feels this is a crucial juncture in the series, he usually revisits the plan. But one must take into account the ordeal he faces mentally every time he breaks down,” Desai added.

Workload Spike Sydney Caused Jasprit Bumrah's Injury
Sohum Desai also revealed that there is a set number of overs that is decided for Jasprit Bumrah to bowl per Test match. However, in the Melbourne Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December-January, he bowled extra overs without any breather between spells. Hence, a spike in his workload caused his back injury in Sydney.
“I’ve known him since the ACL injury in 2014, during his days with the Gujarat domestic team. He is always trying to understand how his body responds to different circumstances,” Desai said.
“There is a set number of overs that is decided for Bumrah to bowl per Test. One can go five-seven overs beyond that limit, but what needs to be seen is how those extra overs are bowled. At the MCG in the previous Test series, he bowled those extra overs without much of a breather between spells. That caused a spike in his workload, which triggered the back injury in Sydney," he revealed.
