India began their campaign in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 on a sour note as they were defeated by 5 wickets in the first Test of the five-match series at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds. India will now look to level the series when they face the hosts in the second Test at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. Following India's loss in the last game, Shubman Gill's men are likely to make some big changes in the playing XI for the match that begins on July 2 (Wednesday).
No Change In Top Six
India are likely to stick with the same batting order from the first Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are set to open the innings. Both batters notched up centuries in the match. Hence, they will both be looking to continue their sparkling run of form in Edgbaston as well. Sai Sudharsan had a debut innings to forget, getting out for a duck. In the second innings, he scored 43 runs. He might be given yet another chance at no.3.
Shubman Gill, the captain, will continue to bat at no.4, after he smashed a 147-run knock in the first innings of the first Test. Rishabh Pant, after a dream Test match at Headingley, where he slammed two centuries in two innings, will continue his spot at no.5.
Despite his poor run in the first Test, Karun Nair is expected to be given a chance in the second Test as well.
Shardul Thakur Out
Shardul Thakur had a pretty poor run in the first Test, scoring 4 runs across the two innings, while picking up just two wickets. Hence, he might be dropped from the playing XI. In his place, Nitish Kumar Reddy might come in to bat at no.7, and will get a chance in England finally, after his dream run in Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah OUT, Arshdeep Singh To Debut
India are expected to leave out Jasprit Bumrah, despite assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate revealing that he is fit and available for selection. This is because the fast bowler declared that he will play just three out of the five matches due to workload management issues. India are also expected to drop Prasidh Krishna after his expensive outing in the first Test.
If the practice sessions are anything to go by, then it is likely that Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep will be picked in the playing XI and opening with the new ball. It will be a Test debut for Arshdeep.
Ravindra Jadeja might be dropped after a poor outing in the first Test. Kuldeep Yadav can likely come in as his replacement as the specialist spinner.
Mohammed Siraj will retain his place, and lead the pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
