The accomplished Croatian forward Bojan Bogdanovic formally announced his retirement from professional basketball on June 29, 2025, capping a ten-year NBA career largely due to chronic foot issues. He played for six teams throughout his time there, including the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Utah Jazz, where he made a name for himself as a consistent scorer. Born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bogdanovic started playing basketball in Europe, where he showed off his skills with teams like Fenerbahçe, Real Madrid, and Cibona Zagreb. He was one of the most talented players of his generation, and his success in European leagues served as the springboard for his NBA career.
The Brooklyn Nets acquired Bogdanovic's rights after he was selected by the Miami Heat with the 31st overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. After entering the NBA in 2014, he played for a number of clubs, including the New York Knicks and the Washington Wizards. His career averages are 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, and he has a remarkable 39.4% three-point shooting percentage. With the Detroit Pistons, he had his greatest season in 2022–2023, averaging 21.6 points per game.
A key member of the Croatian national team, Bojan Bogdanovic, competed for his nation in a number of international tournaments, including the 2016 Olympics and other FIBA events. His legacy as one of Croatia's best basketball players was cemented in large part by his contributions.
A left foot ailment that needed two surgeries and 14 months of intensive rehabilitation had a major impact on Bogdanovic's final NBA season. In his retirement announcement, he reflected on his journey, stating, "Sometimes in life, you don't choose the moment. The moment chooses you. After 14 months of battling a foot injury, the time has come to close a chapter."
Known for his professionalism and ability to score points, Bojan Bogdanovic, one of the most successful European players in the NBA, retires at the age of 36. Many young basketball players find inspiration in his path from Mostar to the NBA. For years to come, people will remember his influence on the sport.
