Rohit Sharma-led India ended the country's 11-year wait to win an ICC title by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in a nail-biting final played in Barbados on June 29. Hardik Pandya propelled India to a title win by bowling the match-winning final over. Suryakumar Yadav's remarkable catch to dismiss David Miller all but ended SA's hopes of winning their first ICC title. It was India's first ICC title win since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
On the one-year anniversary of India's title win, Rohit made a big reveal about Rahul Dravid and revealed that he wanted to step down after the 2023 ODI World Cup. India suffered a heartbreak in the final and lost to Australia.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Rohit said: "Rahul bhai wanted to step down after the 2023 World Cup. But we said, 'There's another World Cup in six months. We've come this far. Let's give it one more shot.' He agreed-and I'm so glad he did. I'm sure even now he feels that he made the right decision."
"For me personally, it was also emotional. My identity as a cricketer began with this format-in the 2007 T20 World Cup. To come full circle and lift the trophy again in 2024-it was just fantastic," he added.
Dravid-coached India suffered a one-sided defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England. In 2023, they reached the final of the ODI WC. And in 2024, Dravid won the first ICC trophy of his career.
The title win marked an end to Dravid's coaching stint, which started after the 2021 T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended their T20I careers after the WC and retired from the shortest format. They continued to play Test cricket till the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Rohit and Virat are now only active in ODI cricket. As for Dravid, he is the present head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR). He kicked off his coaching career with RR in IPL 2014.
