Keshav Maharaj created history and etched his name in the record books during Zimbabwe's first innings of the ongoing Test match in Bulawayo. The senior spinner is leading South Africa in the ongoing two-match series in place of Temba Bavuma. He has already captained SA in ODIs and T20Is and is doing captaincy in Tests for the first time. Bavuma, the regular SA captain, is missing the series due to a left hamstring strain. Maharaj-led SA have dominated the proceedings and can finish the game on day 4.
Maharaj, who scalped 3 wickets in Zimbabwe's first innings, created history and became the first-ever South African spinner to scalp 200 wickets in Test cricket. Overall, he became the 9th bowler to achieve the milestone for the Proteas.
As many as 8 pacers have achieved this milestone for SA but Maharaj is the first spinner to do so. Dale Steyn, who finished his Test career with 439 scalps, has most wickets for SA.
He is followed by Shaun Pollock (421), Makhaya Ntini (390), Kagiso Rabada (336), Allan Donald (330), Morne Morkel (309), Jacques Kallis (291) and Vernon Philander (224), respectively.
Maharaj made his Test debut against Australia in 2016. He has 202* wickets in 58 Tests and has been one of the best bowlers for SA since his debut. He has also played 38 ODIs and 39 T20Is. He scalped one wicket in the World Test Championship final against Australia, which South Africa won.
