In what comes as a big development, the Asia Cup 2025 is likely to go ahead in September. The tournament was in jeopardy after India-Pakistan ties hit a new low following the Pahalgam attack, but according to a report in Cricbuzz, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is hopeful of releasing the schedule in the first week of July.
It must be noted that nothing concrete has been decided so far, and a formal decision could be taken next week. Asia Cup 2025 will be a six-team tournament, played in the T20 format, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the UAE competing for the title.
India are the official host of the Asia Cup 2025, but the tournament is likely to be played in a hybrid model, most likely in UAE. The decision was taken after BCCI and PCB reached an agreement that all India-Pakistan matches will be played at neutral venues.
Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, tensions peaked between India and Pakistan, and speculations were rife that India could boycott playing Pakistan in global events too. The arch-rivals don't play bilateral series, and only clash in ICC events and the Asia Cup. The rumours were a big setback to cricket fans who eagerly wait for global events to see the two teams clash. However, according to recent developments, it is believed that India-Pakistan cricket will continue in the global events.
Recently ICC released the schedule of the Women's ODI World Cup, hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and the Women's T20 World Cup in England, and India and Pakistan were set to play each other in both events.
India-Pakistan matches generate a lot of revenue for the governing bodies and they would have suffered a huge setback financially if cricketing ties between the two countries were completely suspended. This could be one of the reasons why ICC, ACC, and member boards are keen on keeping the India-Pakistan rivalry alive.
