Former India cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri said that the World Test Championship (WTC) final could be shifted to larger capacity venues like the Melbourne Cricket Ground or Narendra Modi Stadium in the future. Shastri said it's good to have the final in England as the tournament continues to gain popularity, but it should be shifted to bigger venues that can hold a large crowd in the future.
The first WTC final, played between India and New Zealand, was held at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, while the second final between Australia and India was played at the Oval in London. The recent WTC final between South Africa and Australia was played at the iconic Lord's.
“I think to start off initially, it’s good if it’s here (Lord’s) actually. Once it gets the popularity and eyebrows it deserves, then it can start shifting. But I think the MCG can be a great place for a World Test Championship Final. Ahmedabad can be a great place for the WTC Final. Basically, the places where you can draw a crowd. Because Lord’s is not a 100,000-seater stadium. So, irrespective of which team is playing, you know you will get a good crowd,” Shastri said in a Wisden Cricket podcast.
According to reports, England could host the next two editions of the WTC final in 2027 and 2031. As per the ICC's FTP, the 2027 final is set to be played at Lord's. The BCCI wanted to host the WTC 2027 final, but their bid was dismissed with England being favoured for the continual support shown to neutral Test.
