India scored five centuries in the first Test yet suffered a five-wicket defeat to England at Headingley, Leeds. India had the game under control many times, but they couldn't hold onto the advantage. Lower order collapses in both innings meant that India never really batted England out of the game. They had a chance to post a score of 600 in the first innings but slipped from 430-3 to 471 all out. They repeated the blunder in the second innings when they collapsed from 287-3 to 364.
The 371 run target looked a daunting one, but on the flat pitch, against an out-of-form bowling attack, England made easy work of it. Ben Duckett played a magnificent innings of 149 to put England on the brink of a win, while Joe Root notched up a composed fifty to seal the game for the hosts.
Joe Root has been a thorn in the flesh for India, and if they don't have plans to contain him, especially on flat pitches, he will make India pay in the series.

Joe Root Nearing Big Milestone

Meanwhile, Joe Root could script history in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Root, who has scored 2927 runs against India, needs 73 runs to become the first player in the world to score 3000 runs against India in Test cricket. Root is already the leading run scorer against India in the format. He is followed by legendary Ricky Ponting who scored 2555 runs against India.
Batsman Runs Matches
Joe Root 2927 31
Ricky Ponting 2555 29
Alastair Cook 2431 30
Steve Smith 2356 24
Clive Lloyd 2344 28
Joe Root could also become the first player in the world to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship, but he may need more than a Test to get to the landmark. Root has so far scored 5624 runs in the WTC, and he needs 376 runs to achieve the historic feat.
