Rohit Sharma disclosed that India wished to eliminate Australia from the 2024 T20 World Cup as a revenge for the loss 2023 ODI World Cup final. Australia won their sixth ODI World Cup after crushing India in the final in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023. India, who had gone undefeated throughout the tournament, lost to the Australians by six wickets. The Indian players and supporters, who were hoping to watch the team win the cup at home, were disappointed by this.
India advanced to the T20 World Cup semi-finals by defeating Australia in their last Super 8 encounter. After a shocking loss to Afghanistan, the Australians need to win the game to have a chance to advance to the last four. But because of the defeat to Rohit's Men in Blue side, India and Afghanistan prevailed, and the Australians were eliminated.
Rohit, who struck 92 disclosed the players' conversations in the changing room. The players intended to give Australia a 'gift' because, according to the former T20I captain, Australia had wrecked November 19 for them. According to Rohit, the players were aware that defeating Australia would result in the Australians' elimination from the competition.
"Australia had ruined our and the whole country's November 19 in ODI WC Final, so we should also give them a gift. These kinds of things were talked about in the dressing room. We had it in our minds that if we win this match, Australia will be out of this T20 World Cup," said Rohit in the interview with Star Sports.
India's momentum was sparked by their victory against Australia, and they went all the way to defeat South Africa in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2024.
