20 years after the eventful 2010 edition in New Delhi, the Commonwealth Games are set to return to Indian shores. The centennial edition of the quadrennial event in 2030 is likely to take place in India, with other interested host cities failing to put up a bid.
As per a report by the Indian Express, Ahmedabad is the front-runner to host the event, with India racing ahead in the bidding process. The published information suggests that India is viewed as a Test event for the 2036 Olympics, which the country is also bidding for and hoping to host the world's greatest sporting competition for the first time.
The same report has revealed that Canada was the biggest rival to India's bid, but they are not going ahead due to 'cost-related issues.' The Canadian province of Ontario has pulled out of the race, which was one of four provinces that were part of the 'United Canada' effort to host the 2030 edition.
The first-ever edition of the CWG (then known as British Empire names) in 1930 was held in Canada in the city of Hamilton in Ontario. The country's plans to host the 100th edition have not come to fruition.
Nigeria was also looking at putting up a bid for the games, but that has not been able to take off either.
Meanwhile, as per the same report by the Indian Express, a delegation from India, which consisted of a minister and bureaucrats from the Gujarat government, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) met leaders from the Commonwealth Sports Leaders in London on June 7.
it is also reported that officials of the Commonwealth Sports Officials will be visiting Ahmedabad in August, days before the deadline to officially submit a bid (August 31st).
If we manage to secure the hosting rights, it will be the fourth time the country will host a major multi-sport event after the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games, as well as the 2010 CWG, all of which were hosted in Delhi.
