After Ben Duckett's game-winning innings against India at Headingley in Leeds, former England cricketer David Lloyd compared the batter to Virender Sehwag in his Daily Mail column. On Tuesday, Duckett played one of the most remarkable performances at Headingley as England won by five wickets on Day 5 after chasing down 371 runs. In the fourth innings, the left-handed opener hammered 149 off 170 balls. Additionally, he and Zak Crawley formed an opening partnership of 188 runs, which set the stage for England's victorious chase.
Duckett's impact was comparable to what the Indian opener previously did to the English bowlers in Test matches, Lloyd said, drawing comparisons to Sehwag's achievements against England. Duckett performs the reverse sweep for fun, according to the former England cricket player, who believes it is a natural shot.
“Ben Duckett has come a long way since he poured a drink over Jimmy Anderson on an Ashes tour. He is now England’s answer to Virender Sehwag and opening the batting in your World XI. The reverse sweep is such a natural shot for him. He plays it for fun. It’s no surprise to learn he was a good hockey player at school because it’s like a hockey shot,” Lloyd wrote.
Sehwag was renowned for his daring batting approach, particularly when against England. In Chennai in 2008, he helped India chase 387 runs with an innings of 86 off 68 balls, one of his most memorable performances. Sehwag amassed 821 runs at a strike-rate of 75.39 in 17 Test matches against England, including two hundreds and four fifties.
In their victory over India at Headingley, England played with incredible conviction and purpose, displaying a bold and astute strategy throughout the game. This was particularly noticeable during Ben Duckett's knock against Jasprit Bumrah. With 2621 runs at an average of 43.68 in 34 Test matches thus far, Duckett has already established himself as one of the most devastating openers in international cricket.
