Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir lost his cool at a reporter after being asked about Rishabh Pant's heroic performance in the first Test between India and England at the Headingley Cricket Ground, which the Shubman Gill-led team lost by five wickets.
Pant put in a record-breaking performance with centuries in both innings of the Test match. The Indian vice-captain became the first Indian cricketer to achieve this feat against England and only the 7th player from the country to complete the rare double. Pant is also only the second wicket-keeper batter in Test cricket's history to smash tons in both innings of a match after Andy Flower (vs South Africa in 2001) and the first to do it away from home.
However, that was not enough for Pant to earn praise from Pant. During the post-match press conference, the Indian head coach was unhappy with a reporter after being asked about the 27-year-old's heroic display.
Gambhir cut off the reporter before he could complete his statement and questioned him over why he was asking just about Pant. The 43-year-old pointed out that there were three other centurions for India as well as a five-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah.
"There are three more centuries as well. Those are our positives. I would have liked it if you said a hundred from Jaiswal. Hundred from Shubman on debut as captain. Hundred from KL and two hundreds from Rishabh Pant. Five centuries in a Test match. The question could have been better. But again, those are great positives. We had a five-for from Jasprit Bumrah as well, but ultimately, everything boils down to getting the result. We want big runs from our top 6-7, which we got in this match. We got a five-for. We go out there to win a Test match. Unfortunately, that was not the case," said Gambhir.
This match marked the first match for Pant since being officially named as the new vice-captain of the team, while Gill was appointed captain.
The two teams will now head to Edgbaston for the second Test from Wednesday (July 2).
