Indian cricket's forgotten star Prithvi Shaw bared his heart out in an interaction after it emerged that he will be moving out of Mumbai ahead of the new domestic season as he aims to make a comeback into the Indian team and admitted his mistakes for his career graph going downhill.
For those unversed, Shaw was regarded as the next big thing in Indian cricket from his teenage days and led India to victory in the 2018 U-19 World Cup. He made his Test debut for India in the same year, aged just 18 and scored a century on debut for the national team.
However, Shaw has not played for India in Test cricket since December 2020 and has not featured for the Men in Blue in any format since July 2021. Overall, the right-handed batter has played just 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20 for India.
His career hit a new low last year when he went unsold in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. The youngster was purchased by Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2018 for Rs. 1.2 crore and stayed with them till 2024. He was retained ahead of the 2022 mega auction for a whopping amount of Rs. 7.5 crore.
While Shaw made a big impact on the league, DC released him after two poor seasons with the bat. To the surprise of many, he did not find any buyers in the auction.
Things went from bad to worse for him as he was dropped from Mumbai's playing XI in the Ranji Trophy and not picked in

Prithvi Shaw Blames Himself For Downfall

Opening up on the multiple setbacks in his career for the first time, Shaw admitted that he did not give enough time to the game. The Indian cricketer further claimed that he got into the wrong company and got influenced to take actions, which he should not have. He also credited his father for standing by him through all phases of his career.
"A lot happened. People's perspectives is different. Only I can understand what happened. I've made a lot of wrong decisions in life. I gave cricket very less time. Used to practice 4-5 hours earlier, never got tired of batting, used to spend half the day on the ground. This happened till 2023. After that, I started taking things that are not important as important. I made the wrong friends. I was at the top, so you make friends. Going here, going there. Went off track. Used to be on the ground for 8 hours, that went down to 4 hours," said Shaw in an interaction with News24 Sports.
"Had some family problems. My grandfather expired. He was very close to me. I admit my mistake. My dad always supported me. He saw good and bad. In life, everyone's graph is up and down. It is a lesson for me, but my dad said, 'Only Prithvi Shaw can get himself back no one else.' I have left everything else. Do not even go out now. Paps also spot you. People have a perspective, they do not know it's a family dinner or I am going bowling. I like bowling but I cannot do that at home. I live alone at home. Dad keeps coming. I like it. I hate going out now," Shaw further added.
However, Shaw refused to blame his friends and stated that it was his own mistake. He further stated that those friends also disappeared from his life as his career dipped.
"It is not their fault. I am so mentally wrong. I should have known. But it happened in a flow. Went here and there. It was my mistake. I admit it was a distraction in my life. It is not there now. I have myself strong. When you don't see me in the ground, people who were there at that time, who distracted me, are not there now. I take it as a positive; they cleared the way.
"I am responsible myself. I do not blame anyone. I am mentally strong. I am knowledgeable. If i got distracted, it was my own thing. If I reached here, that also through my own. I don't want to blame anyone," Shaw concluded.
