Joe Root etched his name in the history books after guiding England to a five-wicket victory against India in the first test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Root continued his red-hot form after a rare failure in the first innings with a half-century. The 34-year-old remained unbeaten at 56 as the hosts chased down 371, which is England's second-highest chase in history as well as the second biggest total that has been chased against India in the fourth innings of a Test match.

Joe Root Creates History

Root continued his incredible record in the fourth innings of Test matches and broke Ben Stokes' world record. Root now has the most 50+ scores in the World Test Championship (WTC) in run-chases. This was the seventh occasion of the England cricket star reaching the milestone in the fourth innings in a WTC match, with two centuries and five half-centuries.

Most 50+ Scores In WTC (4th Innings)

Player 50+ scores in the fourth innings
Joe Root 8
Ben Stokes 7
Babar Azam 4
Jamie Blacwood 4
Zak Crawley 4
Dimuth Karunaratne 4
Root also has the most runs by a batter in the fourth innings in the WTC and is just 14 runs away from becoming the first player to complete 1000 runs.

Joe Root Extends Massive Records

The England cricket star had last year broken Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test cricket history in the fourth innings and now has become the first player to cross the 1700 runs in red-ball cricket at the international level while batting in the fourth innings.
This was Root's 12th 50+ scores while chasing, which is the joint-second most alongside Sunil Gavaskar. Only Graeme Smith, Chris Gayle, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (13 each) have more.
Root also has 962 runs in the fourth innings in England, which is the most by a player in the fourth innings by a player in one country and will become the first to 1000 runs in this list too.
Root also became the first player to score 40+ scores in WTC history. Marnus Labuschagne (33) and Steve Smith (31), are the other players to have more than 30+ scores since the tournament started in 2019.
Root also extended his record for the most 50+ scores by any player against India (22). He had broken Ricky Ponting's record (20) last year when England toured India.
